Even after a year of uncertainty thanks to COVID-19, butterflier Brianna Throssell believes she is more prepared than ever coming into her second Olympic Games.

Speaking to SEN host Tim Gossage earlier this week in the lead up to the Games, Throssell gave an insight into the ways she is striving to achieve a personal best performance in Tokyo later this month.

“I’ve grown a lot as a swimmer” she said.

“Confidence wise, I am coming to Tokyo a lot more prepared than Rio, physically, mentally and emotionally.”

After qualifying in the Women’s 200m Butterfly at Trials to secure her spot on the team, Throssell was then also able to gain an individual swim in the 100m fly because she made the FINA A time, and has the potential to line up in relay events too.

“I missed the Australian qualifications by .01 [in the 100m fly], but because I made the Fina A time, I was able to be selected as a member of the team,” she said.

“I am still really happy with my form, I was hoping to be a little bit faster but hopefully I can make a relay team too, it’s been head down to prepare for Tokyo.”

With a very different team boarding the flight to Tokyo, and the likes of Cate Campbell and Emily Seebohm going into their fourth Olympics, there is a diverse mix of experience within the Australian swim team.

“There are seven rookies on the team this year, we have first timers Meg Harris and Mollie O’Callaghan and they are so good, it’s really exciting to see them continue to improve.

“And also, Zac Stubblety-Cook, he’s a superstar competing in the free and fly.”

The Tokyo bound Olympic swim team assembled in Cairns earlier this week for their final preparations before departing for Tokyo next week.
