New Multi Class Classifications

Swimming WA is pleased to announce the launch of two new Multi Class swimming classifications; S18 Significant Other Impairment and S19 High Functioning Autism. The introduction of these new classes within Swimming Australia's multi class system is a world first. S18 will be predominantly made up of Down syndrome athletes.

Eligibility Criteria

Sport Class Eligibility Criteria

S18
Significant Other Impairment

Athletes with Down syndrome who have:

  • A formal diagnosis of Trisomy 21 or Translocation Down syndrome.
  • For safety athletes must not have symptomatic Atlantoaxial Instability (AAI).

Athletes with intellectual disability who have:

  • Satisfied the S14 eligibility criteria, and
  • Meet the FAST test requirements.

Note: Mosaic Down syndrome is not an eligible criteria.

S19
High Functioning Autism

Athletes with Autism who have:

  • A full scale IQ score above 75, OR diagnosis of no intellectual disability, and;
  • A Formal diagnosis of Autism, ASD, or Asperger's syndrome.

To compete in Multi Class events at Swimming WA competitions, swimmers must be classified. Classification for S18 and S19 is facilitated through Sport Inclusion Australia (SIA) - more information and access to the relevant application forms can be found of the SIA website.
