WA Swimming Legend Receives OAM
Written by: Naomi Quinlivan

On behalf of the Western Australian swimming fraternity, Swimming WA would like to congratulate Lyn McKenzie, who was recently awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) during the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Lyn is a stalwart of West Australian swimming, having been inducted into the Swimming WA Hall of Fame in 2008, and last month was announced at the Westpac Swimmer of the Year Awards as an inductee into the Swimming WA Hall of Legends.

Such is the regard for Lyn McClements and her legacy to swimming in the State, each year at the awards the Lyn McClements medal is awarded to the best swimmer in WA.

Swimming WA President Louis van Aardt was thrilled with this development;

“It was almost 2 years ago when Swimming WA together with the WA Olympic Council submitted an application for Lyn to be considered for this most prestigious of honours. It was our view that Lyn deserved special recognition not only for her feats as an athlete, but also for her contribution to swimming over so many years. As a member of the SWA Hall of Fame and now a member of the SWA Hall of Legends, her involvement in the sport of swimming is so important as she sets a shining example to aspiring athletes of what is possible. We congratulate Lyn on this wonderful development”.

Lyn remains WA’s only individual able-bodied female Olympic Gold medallist, having claimed Gold in the 100m butterfly during the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games. She also claimed Silver in the 4x100m Medley at the same event.

In addition, this latest accolade Lyn was inducted into Sport of Australia’s Hall of Fame in 1991 where she will forever be memorialized as one of swimming’s great successes.
