The Caloundra Aquatic Centre in Queensland will get a special visit from London Olympic debutant Ryan Napoleon this afternoon as part of their EnergyAustralia GO Swim day activities.
The fun will start at 6:00pm with novelty races, a barbecue dinner, coaching, skills and information sessions, just some of the activities planned for the evening.
Napoleon, who trains at St Peters Western Swim Club in Brisbane, won a gold and silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi for his efforts in the 4x200m freestyle relay and the 400m freestyle and represented Australia in both of these events at the 2012 London Olympics.
The 22-year-old credits joining a club as a young boy with his love of swimming today.
“When I first started swimming I wasn’t a fan, until I joined a club, made friends and realised how much fun you could have in the sport. I was getting fit and healthy and being social all at the same time,” Napoleon said.
The EnergyAustralia GO Swim days provides an opportunity for new members to familiarise themselves with their local swim club and a chance for existing members to get together and celebrate everything great about swimming.
Napoleon added that swim clubs catered for a wide variety of wants and needs – from the social swimmer to someone wanting more from the sport.
“I started to take my swimming seriously as I got older and the club supported me and gave me options to increase my training and competition load. There are opportunities for swimmers of all levels and abilities to enjoy club swimming,” he said.
As the weather starts to heat up, water safety and swimming is returning to the forefront of people’s minds and EnergyAustralia Director, Adrian Merrick says the energy provider is proud to be supporting GO Swim month and Australia’s favourite summer pastime, swimming.
“In partnership with Swimming Australia we will seek out new and innovative opportunities for our customers, to support elite Australian swimmers to achieve their goals and promote safe and healthy swimming for Australian families,” Mr Merrick says.
