The competition standard has well and truly been set on night one of the 2012 State Teams Short Course Championships, at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

Queensland and Western Australia have made their intentions clear with each state taking a title and a meet record in the first two timed finals of the meet.

Fourteen-year-old old Alanna Bowles took the first title of the night when she blew her competition out of the water in the girl’s 13/14yrs 400m freestyle final, hitting the wall in 4:09.78 – a new meet record and a two second personal best.

The five-time Australian Age medallist used her Trans Tasman racing experience to get the better of 7-time Australian Age medallist and fellow Queenslander Chelsea Gubecka  who took second place in 4:13.95.

“I’m really happy with that time and the two-second PB (Personal Best) especially because I didn’t even get the chance to taper. Having Trans Tasman earlier this year was good because I could race people that I normally wouldn’t get the chance to in Australian competitions,” Bowles said.

Third place went to Australian Age silver medallist from this event in April 13-year-old Tamsin Cook in 4:17.82.

The second timed final for the night saw another meet record fall with West Australian’s Damian Fyfe showing no signs of fatigue as he stormed to the wall in the boy’s 14/15yrs 400m freestyle.

The Australian Age champion from this event looked strong throughout the 16-lap race, eventually hitting the wall a body-length ahead of his closest rival in 3:55.31, to take just 0.28 off Jordan Harrsion’s 2010 record.

Two triple-Australian Age medallists were left to battle it out for second and third with 15-year-old Josh Parrish (3:58.95) just getting the better of New South Welshman Hayden Hinds-Sydenham who touched third in 4:00.86.

Following his impressive performance at the 2012 Junior Pan Pacs Regan Leong (1:47.49) continued his run of success breaking a meet record from 2010 in the first leg of the boy’s 16/17yrs 4x200m freestyle relay.

Leong will contest the 200m freestyle final on Monday morning and will no doubt be looking to maintain his number one ranking in the event.

With wins in both the boy’s 17 and under and girl’s 16 and under 4x200m freestyle relays as well as a number of individual events, Queensland has taken the early lead in the competition on 170 points.

But the meet is still young and New South Wales (151) and Victoria (117) won’t go down without a fight.

Girl’s 15/16yrs 400m freestyle

The girl’s 15/16yrs 400m freestyle saw Megan Gianotti add to Queensland’s point score as she held off attacks late in the race to cruise to victory in 4:12.77.

Racing in front of a home crowd, 15-year-old Bonnie Zhang put in a solid chase at the final turn but couldn’t catch Gianotti and was left to settle for silver in 4:13.35. Third place went to Hayley Anschau just behind in 4:13.87.

Boy’s 16/17yrs 400m freestyle

Queensland went one-two in the boy’s 16/17yrs 400m freestyle final with 17-year-old Jack McLoughlin (3:51.10) too strong for his teammate and Junior Pan Pacs representative Jared Gilliland (3:54.68) who finished just over three seconds behind to take second place.

Victoria spoiled a Queensland clean sweep with Isaac Jones taking third in 3:55.30.
