Juniors wrap up Trans-Tasman Open Water Swim camp

The 2012 age group gold medallists over 5 and 10km from Perth Open Water Nationals this year, along with eight New Zealand junior swimmers will wrap up a Junior Trans-Tasman Open Water Camp in Sydney today.
The eight Australian athletes aged between 14 and 16 who participated in the camp were Suzan Ryan (QLD), Kate Hofmeyer (SA), Zannetta lovi (QLD), Jessica Bayliss (QLD), Brett Fielding (WA), Oliver Pye (QLD), Lachlan Colquhoun (ACT) and Chris Deegan (SA).
The week started off with the 5 and 10km NSW State Open Water Swim championships last weekend where all athletes raced in age categories.
Lachlan Colquhoun from New South Wales won the men’s 16-year-old 10km open water race in a time of 1hr56:40, closely followed by Chris Deegan from South Australia in 2hrs00:33. Lachlan also won the 5km race in under an hour.
In the 15yrs age group, Western Australian Brett Fielding won both the 5 and 10km open water swims in a time of 2hrs06:18 and 1hr02:28 respectively.
In the women’s events Zannetta Lovi won the 15-year-old 10km in 2hrs05:57 with another South Australian Suzan Ryan coming second in 2hrs07:11. Zannetta’s powerful 10km swim beat Fielding’s time by 21 seconds in their age group. In the 5km distance Lovi missed out on first place to Ryan by a small margin of 4 seconds.
For the next four days the athletes participated in a camp where they focused on development giving the 16 swimmers a chance to train in a high intensity environment against the best in their age group.
The Head Coach for the camp Greg Towle said the purpose of the camp was to give recognition to high performing athletes and create a pathway to senior teams for junior athletes.
“The camp was a huge success and came together well. All the swimmers where challenged and have been exposed to future opportunities” said Towle.
The camp finished up this morning with the New Zealand squad heading back home and the Australian athletes returning to their respective states.
