Australia has kicked off the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) in style, collecting 11 medals on the first night of competition – four gold, three silver and four bronze.

Western Australia’s sole swimming representative Damian Fyfe kicked off the morning’s proceedings in the heats of the men’s 200m freestyle, progressing through to the finals in seventh position (1:53.08).

The heats of the men’s 200 butterfly called for the Perth City swimmer to back up on his previous race a mere three events later. Fyfe finished fast in a time of 2:07.19 to round out the final field in eighth spot.

In the night’s finals session, Fyfe had held his position against a strong field finishing eighth in both races: men’s 200m freestyle (1:55.84) and men’s 200m freestyle (2:09.19).

Fyfe will contest the men’s 100m freestyle in the Day 2 heats.

The competition sees swimmers aged between 13 and 17 compete against the likes of China, New Zealand, Brazil, Hungary, Canada, Japan and a combined Oceania team.  The Australian team is broken into two groups; Australian Green and Australia Gold.
