2019 Swimming WA Malaysian Training Camp

31 October 2019

Over the past week, Swimming WA was represented by State Head Coach Leigh Nugent, Team Manager Brooke Kemp and seven promising young athletes at an international training camp in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

The training camp is a part of a new initiative formed by Swimming WA with assistance from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries with the intention of creating a sport development relationship with our neighbouring nations.

Thanks to the generosity and support of D Swim Academy (DSA) in Malaysia. The team members included Josh Yong (UWA-West Coast, c: Michael Palfery, WAIS), Crystal Edwards (UWA-West Coast, c: Michael Shaw), Lily Beste (Rockingham, c: Brooke Kemp), Kyle Lee (Bunbury, c: Jason Evans), Ruan Van der Reit (UWA-West Coast, c: Michael Shaw), Damian Badenhorst (Rockingham, c: Brooke Kemp) and Matthew Joubert (South Shore, c: Chris Twomey), departed Perth for Kuala Lumper, Malaysia on Tuesday, 8 September 2019 and returned on Sunday, 13 September.

The focus of the training camp was to simulate what athletes would face when qualifying for an Australian Team. Placing the swimmers in a foreign country enabled them to experience and adjust to changes in climate, culture and diet.

The team was treated to elite training facilities in Malaysia, training at the National Aquatic Centre. Under the guidance of State Head Coach Leigh Nugent, they made the most of the experience and athletes focussed on skill development to assist with long-term success.

The team will now return to their home programmes to work on the skills developed whilst abroad. Additionally, some athletes have a tight turn around as they get ready to compete at the 2019 Hancock Prospecting Australian Short Course Championships in Melbourne from 24 to 26 October 2019.

No doubt it will be a thrilling few months watching the athletes continue to develop and achieve their goals, inspiring and educating their teammates along the way. Furthermore, it is a very exciting time for Western Australia swimming as the relationship between Swimming WA and our neighbours continue to develop and strengthen.

Once again, Swimming WA would like to thank DSA for their incredible hospitality by allowing our team to have a successful camp and we look forward to welcoming the DSA team to Western Australia in the near future.
