2020 Westpac Summer League Round 1 Recap.

15 January 2020

The 2020 Westpac Summer League is now underway, with a stellar weekend of racing in the books for the North, Central and Southern Region.

Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January 2020 saw over 200 swimmers take to the water in Round 1 of the Westpac Summer League with lots of fun, games and entertainment being enjoyed across the state.

The weekend kicked off with the North Zone racing at St Mary’s Anglican Girls School the home of North Coast Swim Club. With the sun shining and a number of Northern clubs set to compete, the stage was set for a fantastic morning at the Pool. Straight from the start, it was clear Breakers were out for the win competing and cheering with might! Although they faced tough competition from the home team of North Coast, Breakers managed to win, taking home 10 points and the first win of the 2020 season.

The second event on Saturday was held at Penrhos College, hosted by Southside Penrhos Wesley and had over 120 kids racing for their clubs. The Pool and grandstands were full of happy spectators and athletes as some incredible action took place in the pool. With many highlights such as the 6x25m Freestyle Relay, the dance competition, and a visit from former Fremantle Docker, Lee Spurr, the Westpac Summer League once again proved it was the most fun you could have in a Pool. Congratulations to Southside Penrhos Wesley for not only hosting a fantastic event but for also winning the first round 1 for the Central Zone.

Rockingham Swimming Club kindly hosted the final event for this action-packed weekend at the wonderful facility at Aqua Jetty, Warnbro. With over 50 swimmers taking to the water, there wasn’t a better place to start your Sunday morning. Once again, the stands were full of spectators and swimmers getting behind their club and enjoying a sunny morning at the pool. After a tight start, Rockingham pulled away to a comfortable win over the reigning Champions, Thornlie and Districts Swimming Club however, the kids were battling through every race. Rockingham’s event even had some exhibition swims from Broome Swim Club and it was clear on the day everyone was happy to be in the Pool and enjoying Swimming.

Following this incredibly successful weekend of swimming, you can’t help but feel excited for the Summer of Swimming that lies ahead with plenty of opportunities to get involved left.

Congratulations to Breakers, Southside Penrhos Wesley and Rockingham Swimming Club for winning their respective Meets this weekend. These clubs have earned 10 points and are currently leading their competition with many teams hot on their heels.
