2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games – Wrap up

As the Commonwealth Games wraps up with the closing ceremony yesterday, we would like the take the time to reflect on the amazing achievements performed by our Western Australian athletes.

The Commonwealth Games this year was held in Birmingham, England. There were six days of swimming that took place from Friday, 29 July to Wednesday, 3 August.

We are proud of our nine past and present Western Australian athletes who travelled across to race at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre. A special congratulations to our WA State Technical Official, Mel Tantrum, for her appointment as Australian Swimming Team Manager.

What a big six days of swimming and amazing achievements made over the time. Let’s dive into the highlights from our athletes at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games!

Alex Saffy

The Bunbury Bullet, Alex Saffy, from Bunbury Swimming Club currently training at the Australian Institute of Sport with Martin Roberts, raced on Tuesday. Saffy blitzed the Men’s S10 100m butterfly final in a time of 57.53, bringing home silver for Australia.  

North Coast Swim Club swimmer star, Kieren Pollard, coached by Ian Mills, competed at his first Commonwealth Games. The 23-year-old finished 5th in the Men’s 1500m freestyle final in a time of 15:18.02 and 6th in the Men’s 400m Individual Medley final clocking a time of 4:17.02. Pollard competed in a swim-off in the Men’s 200m butterfly and improved his time from earlier, finishing in a time of 1:58.57.

 

Sprint veteran, Holly Barratt, from Rockingham Swimming Club currently coached by Craig Jackson, swam Australia to the podium with a silver medal in the Women’s 50m butterfly final, touching at time of 26.05.

Josh Edwards-Smith, coached by Michael Bohl from Griffith University, swam the final in both the 100m and 200m backstroke final, finishing 8th and 6th respectively.

Brianna Throssell, coached by Mick Palfrey from USC Spartans Swim Club, took home bronze in the Women’s 100m butterfly final with a time of 57.50 and bronze in the Women’s 200m butterfly final with a time of 2:08.36.

USC Spartans Swim Club swimmer, Joshua Yong, coached by Mick Palfrey, secured himself a spot in the Men’s 100m breaststroke final and achieved 7th with a time of 1:00.60.

Zac Incerti, coached by Peter Bishop from Marion Swimming Club, came home with two gold medals. He competed in both the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relay finals achieving not only a gold medal but also a Commonwealth Games Record for both relays. Incerti competed in the Men’s 100m freestyle on Monday and came 8th, hitting out a time of 49.09.

 

Lewis Burras

Competing for England, we had Lewis Burras from Peel Aquatic coached by Zoe Baker. The 22-year-old took home silver in the Men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, Mixed 4x100m freestyle relay and Men’s 50m freestyle relay in a crazy time of 21.68.

Oliver Brehaut, coached by Zoe Baker from Peel Aquatic, competed for his home country, Jersey Islands. Brehaut experienced his first Commonwealth Games and achieved 5th place in the Men’s 4x100m medley relay and 7th in the Mixed 4x100m freestyle relay.
