Cook qualifies for second Olympics

13 June 2021

Night two of the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials started off with a bang, with Kaylee McKeown setting a new World Record in the Women’s 100m Backstroke in a time of 57.45. WA’s own Holly Barratt (Rockingham) then took out the B Final of the same event, touching the wall in 1:00.57.

In the Multi-Class Men’s 100m Butterfly Alex Saffy (Bunbury) finished second in a time of 1:00.27. Saffy swam under the Paralympic qualifying time for the S9 classification.

Western Australia had two representatives in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke B Final, with St Hilda’s Talara-Jade Dixon and UWA West Coast’s Caitlyn Ribbons finishing in 10th and 15th place respectively.

In what was a spectacular swim, Tamsin Cook (UWA West Coast) qualified for her second Olympic Games in the Women’s 400m Freestyle finishing second in a time of 4:04.10. Cook also broke her own WA All Time State Record previously set at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In a tough battle all the way to the touch, Cook held off Kiah Melverton, with Ariarne Titmus taking the win.

In the final race of the night, Zac Incerti (UWA West Coast) finished fifth in the Men’s 200m Freestyle in a time of 1:46.18, breaking the WA All Time State Record. It was a race to the wall, with the top six place-getters all within one second of the winner. This puts Incerti in good frame for selection on the Men’s 4x200m relay team.
