Impressive Performance by WA Swimmers at Para Pan Pacs In Cairns

Four WA Swimmers were part of the Australian Dolphins Swim Team competing at the Para Pan Pacs in Cairns this week.This team finished at the top of the medal tally competing against other Para-swimming powerhouses USA, Canada, Japan as well as four strong swimming nations - Brazil, New Zealand, Singapore and Costa Rica.

The four WA swimmers and their results were:

  • Ben Popham (Arena, SimonRedmond) Gold: Men S1 - S10 4x 100 Free (S8) Gold: Men 100 Free(S8)
  • Guy Harrison-Murphy (Westside Christchurch, IanMills) Silver: Men 50 Free(S10)

Silver: Men 100 Fly (S10) Bronze: Men 100 Free (S10)

  • Kat Downie (Perth City, MattMagee) Bronze:Womens 200 IM (S10) Bronze:Womens 100 Back(S10)

4th Womens 50 Free (S10)

  • Jeremy McClure (South Shore, ShannonDoody) Gold: Men 100 Back(S11)

The team finished with 94 total medals, 43 GOLD, 30 SILVER and 21 BRONZE. Some other im- pressive facts about the team was that:

  • 61% performances were faster than the selection trials performance
  • 34% of performances were aPB
  • 76% of swims in finals, were faster than the heat performance.

CEO of Swimming WA Darren Beazley said ‘the performances by the Para-swimming team com- peting in Cairns was outstanding and the perfect preparation for the swimmers as they start their journey to Tokyo 2020. We were particularly proud of our WA swimmers, and full credit must go to their coaches and clubs who assisted these swimmers to prepare for this important meet’.
