Records continued to tumble as session two of the Hancock Prospecting Australian Virtual Short Course was completed with races in Hobart and Brisbane tonight and tallied with the earlier swims from Perth, Sydney and Melbourne.
Four more para world records were set by Katja Dedekind (SM13), who claimed two, Ricky Betar (SM14) and Matthew Levy (SM7).
Kaylee McKeown (USC Spartans) continued her red-hot form and added a Commonwealth and Australian record to her World record from this morning’s session and her Dolphins teammate Matt Wilson (SOPAC) claimed a new Australian record.
USC Spartans continued where they left off this morning in Brisbane, as Dedekind added her second and third world record of the meet to her tally when she took out two Multi-class events – the Women’s 200m IM (2:26.56) and the Women’s 100m Backstroke (1:05.00). In the 200IM, University of Queensland’s Paige Leonhardt (SM14) picked up second place and Nelson Bay’s Taylor Corry (SM14) third, following her swim in Sydney on Friday night. Whilst Jasmine Greenwood (S10, Bay and Basin) and Ellie Cole (S9, Knox Pymble) claimed second and third in the 100m backstroke in times of 1:08.05 and 1:11.29 respectively, following their swims in Sydney on Friday night.
“I don’t normally swim the IM so it’s a shock to come home with a PB and a world record at the same time – I am chuffed and really happy about it,” said Dedekind.
“My medal event from Rio is the 100m backstroke so I love doing it and it is a lot more fun doing it for short course with all the turns and underwater. I really had a good time doing it and it reminded me why I love racing, so coming home with a PB and a world record in that race is really fantastic in my eyes.”
Auburn teenager Betar (2:07.77) claimed top spot and a world record in the Men’s 200m IM Multi-class with his swim in Sydney on Friday night, as four-time Paralympian Levy claimed second place in a new world record time of 2:32.42 in Brisbane. USC Spartan’s Jacob Templeton (SM13) continued his good form from this morning’s session to take out third spot in a time of 2:12.01.
McKeown continued her blistering pace into the evening session in Brisbane, breaking the Commonwealth and Australian record in the Women’s 200m IM, ahead of St Peters Western Jenna Forrester and Hunter’s Meg Bailey who clocked in at 2:09.00 and 2:09.15, respectively.
McKeown said she was surprised by her record swims at the meet today.
“It is definitely surprising, coming into this meet I didn’t think I would get a world record this morning and then do this tonight so I am humbled by it and proud of it and proud my teammates and coach got me there as well,” she said.
Wilson (56.89) took out the Men’s 100m breaststroke in a new Australian record beating Samuel Williamson’s (Firbank Aquatics) time of 57.00 – set in Melbourne on Friday morning. USC Spartan’s Jake Packard touched in Brisbane to claim third place in a time of 57.82.
World champion Ariarne Titmus (St Peters Western) took out her pet event – the Women’s 400m Freestyle in 3:54.58, ahead of Chandler’s Leah Neale (3:58.80) and USC Spartan’s Phoebe Hines (4:01.69) who all swam in Brisbane this evening.
Brisbane swims took one, two and three in the Men’s 400m Freestyle with St Peters Western Elijah Winnington (3:37.71) taking top spot and teammates from Rackley Thomas Neill (3:41.02) and MLC National Flippers squad member Samuel Short (3:41.81) claiming second and third, respectively.
