Records Keep Rolling at Virtual Short Course

29 November 2020

Para world records continued to tumble at the Hancock Prospecting Australian Virtual Short Course as session three rounded out this morning with racing in Hobart, Brisbane and Perth, after sessions in the days before in Sydney and Melbourne.

Jacob Templeton (S13) and Katja Dedekind (S13) added to their world record haul as Grant ‘Scooter’ Patterson (S3) and Alexander Tuckfield also notched up world record swims.

The Men’s 200m Freestyle Multi-class saw three world records broken – USC Spartan’s Templeton took out the race in a world record time of 1:55.96, whilst teenager Alexander Tuckfield (S9, SLC Aquadot) claimed a world record with his second place swim, swimming faster than his record split in the 400m in Sydney the day before. Tuckfield touched in 2:01.41 last night in Sydney, and in third place was Central Cairns’ Patterson (S3), who knocked off the world record in his class in a time of 3:56.93.

Templeton continued his impressive meet, breaking the world record in the Men’s 100m Freestyle Multi-class earlier in the session – a record set by fellow Australian Timothy Antalfy. Melbourne Propulsion’s Nicholas Layton (SM15) took out the second spot in 52.24, whilst SOPAC’s Oscar Stubbs (S13) claimed third in 54.65.

Templeton said he felt the hard work was paying off.

“We have been training hard all year and as a swimmer it feels like you are training 99% of the time so you can get very used to training but this is what we do it for, the racing and it’s good that it is paying off,” he said.

“I just stuck to my processes, swimming is all about the skills and short course is about the turns as well, so rather than just getting in there and grunting it I tried to work on those processes.”

Dedekind added her fourth world record of the meet to her tally when she won the Women’s 50m Backstroke in 30.33. Nelson Bay’s Taylor Corry (S14) and St Hilda’s Madeleine McTernan (S14) claimed second and third in times of 31.79 and 31.81, respectively.

In other races, Griffith University’s Emma McKeon added to her wins when she clocked 1:51.83 in the Women’s 200m Freestyle to take first place, followed by Marion’s Madison Wilson, who swum a personal best time, in 1:52.77 and Chandler’s Leah Neale in 1:54.45.

McKeon (55.67) also claimed the Women’s 100m Butterfly in Brisbane with swims in Perth by Rockingham’s Holly Barratt (57.78) and UWA West Coast’s (58.22) Brianna Throssell taking out second and third place.
Bond University’s Alex Graham (1:41.40) took out the Men’s 200m Freestyle, followed by St Peters Western teammates Clyde Lewis (1:43.07) and Elijah Winnington (1:44.07).
