Thornlie Honour 2 Swimming Greats!

Thornlie SC

Swimming WA Chief Executive Officer Darren Beazley was a guest at the 2020 Thornlie and Districts Swimming Club (TDSC) trophy night last night at the Kenwick Football Clubrooms. It was a wonderful evening with many talented swimmers receiving medals and trophies for what was a wonderful year against all odds.

The past 18 months has seen TDSC without a permanent pool to operate from, with Head Coach George Brown and Club President Steve Milford finding water space wherever they could. The Club is tightknit and even with COVID-19 appearing on the horizon in March, the Club stayed together and kept operating.

A highlight of the night was the recognition of 2 greats of TDSC and SWA who are retiring.

George Brown began coaching in 1976 and has coached both able bodied and MC swimmers at national and international level. He produced Fiona Wildy, Paul Lee and John Pedretti who between them held 23 State records. He attended the Paralympics in New York in 1984 as a Coach and was the Australian Coach for the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona. He coached the great Kingsley Bugarin OAM. and Tracey Cross AM.

George is the 57th Member of the SWA Hall of Fame and last night received tributes from the TDSC for his services to the Club over the past 10 years.

The other TDSC great to be honoured was Peter Anderson, who officiated for over 37 years. He has held every position to hold at TDSC and his career was punctuated by his selection to officiate at the 2020 Olympic Games in Sydney. He is the 47th SWA Hall of Fame inductee, a SWA Life Member and in 2020 was awarded the SWA President’s Award.

He too was honoured last night.

On behalf of all SWA Members, congratulations to both George and Peter for your contribution to Western Australian swimming over so many years.
