Welcome from the President

30 October 2019

Welcome from the Swimming WA President

Welcome to the November Edition of the Western Swimmer.  If October was busy, then November looks like it’s going to be even busier with a number of major events coming up on the Calendar.

The Open Water Swimming Series has got underway, with both Coogee and Cottesloe now behind us, and we look toward the Busselton Round on 16 November together with the State Open Water Championships to be held at Rockingham on Saturday, 23 November.  I encourage all of our Clubs to continue to support the Open Water Series and thank those Clubs that have provided volunteers in the first two Rounds.

Back in the pool, the South Zone Championships is set for the 9 and 10 November and we wish the South Zone the very best in delivering those Championships.  Best of luck to the South West and Gascoyne Regions for your Championships.  We know that country and metropolitan swimming will benefit greatly from locals delivering local Meets.

Later in the month, we’ll also have the first SWA Long Course Qualifying Meet on 30 November and

1 December.  If you haven’t registered, we remind you to do that.

A reminder to all Clubs that the SWA By-Laws have been updated as of 12 October 2019, and you can find them on the SWA website.

In the area of Technical Officials, this month will see five courses being delivered in; Carnarvon, Bunbury, Albany, Paraburdoo and Northam.  My sincere thanks to the SWA staff and also members of the TEO Committee who will help deliver these important education and training sessions for our important TEO’s.

During the month of November, we’ll also be starting to prepare for the Asia-Pac Super Splash which will be held on 14 and 15 December.  A number of countries have committed swimmers to come down and compete in this, and we’re also hoping a number of our local swimmers will target this Meet to improve on times but also the chance to swim in a high calibre international Meet.

I’d like to acknowledge the induction of one of Western Australia’s finest athletes in Eamon Sullivan who was inducted into the WA Hall of Championships recently.  It was fantastic for Eamon and his family to be part of the induction which also saw Tessa Parkinson and Elise Rechichi from sailing, and Paralympian Justin Eveson from basketball inducted.  Congratulations to Eamon! It was great to see swimming front and central with our own Brianna Throssell giving the toast for the inductees.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind you that it is important to support our sponsors.  For those Clubs that have yet to move their banking across to Westpac, we encourage to do so this month.  Please contact SWA General Manager Commercial Operations, Emily Randall, to assist you in this process.

It is a really exciting month ahead for all of us in Western Australian swimming and I wish you, no matter where you are swimming, all the very best for the upcoming month.

Best wishes,

Louis van Aardt

President
