August 2018

A very warm welcome to all our Members as we begin to emerge from the depths of a very wet and cold winter indeed. Many of our Clubs and Members have continued with their programmes during the winter in what is shaping as a very exciting Short Course season. The second qualification Meet in July attracted a huge 630 swimmers to HBF Stadium and some of the racing was at an impressive standard. Well done to the Coaches once again for the fine work that you are doing. This weekend’s Rookie Meet is also experiencing strong demand, so we are looking forward to seeing the ‘young guns’ in action on Saturday.

Nationally, the Para Pan Pacs will be staged in Cairns from August 9 - 13 and we are hoping that our swimmers continue to progress and secure medals in what will be fierce competition. The Pan Pacs in Tokyo and Junior Pan Pacs in Fiji will take place later this month and Swimming Australia is expecting some major results on the back of some really fine work by athletes and coaches over the past few months. To those WA athletes and coaches heading to these Meets, our very best wishes to you all.

Back home, the SWA staff have had their annual leave and arrived back in the office ready and raring for another big season of swimming. The SWA Board and I have made a commitment to high levels of service to our Members. I am delighted to announce that Mr. Ryan Dye is our new Membership and Merchandising Manager, joining SWA from the Fremantle Dockers. He will work with Sophie Godfrey in providing first class service and support to our Members. Please join me in giving Ryan a very warm welcome. In more positive news, I am thrilled to advise that two (2) SWA Clubs that have been in ‘recess’ for a short while have indicated that they wish to re-affiliate this year and we’ll be making announcements shortly. For our individual Members, a reminder that SWA will open the affiliation process on Wednesday August 15 and you have until October 1 to re-affiliate. All SWA Members will receive their SWA Membership pack and by popular demand, you will also receive a digital copy of the SWA Summer and Winter Almanac (leading into the 2019 Short Course season).

SWA has also created a brand new role to expand our marketing (eg.website and social media) capability and in response to requests from SWA Clubs for assistance in this area. Ron Woodbine is our new General Manager Marketing and with his experience from the WACA, he will bring a great deal of experience and skills to our sport. Welcome Ron!

We also say goodbye to two integral SWA staff members Samantha Devine and Blake Lornie-Dugold. Blake has taken a position in Events Management for Venues Live at Optus Stadium, and Sam is now working with the High Performance Team at Hockey Australia. I am proud that these two staff members have been able to gain vital experience whilst working at SWA, and now able to use these skills in other sectors.

I was pleased to be out at our Clubs over the past weekend. The South Shore Super Sprint was as an extremely impressive Meet with a wonderful positive vibe. Congratulations to Mel Joy and her team on a job well done. I was also privileged to attend the Perth City Swimming Club trophy night. Perth City have set a very high benchmark for our sport over many, many years and I really enjoyed catching up with Club members on Sunday afternoon. Heidi Gan and her Committee continue to do a wonderful job and I thank you for the invitation to come along.

Our Members will have seen that earlier this month, SWA announced a new Official Apparel Supplier in 2XU. A leading sports apparel brand, 2XU will provide our sport and our Members with access to the highest quality of sports apparel and compression garments at terrific prices. To Ben and Will at 2XU, our sincere thanks for your support and welcome to the WA of swimming family!

The SWA Strategic Plan 2019 - 2024 is in draft form and we have captured a great deal of the feedback from the extensive consultation that took place in April and May. We will be sharing the draft with more focus groups (in particular with athletes and coaches) this month with a view to a public announcement at the SWA Conference on October 6. Make sure that you have your say and get involved in the process.

Speaking of the 2018 SWA Conference, for our new Members, the Conference encapsulates the AGM and a full day of professional development for all Club Committees, with dinner to follow. Registrations for the 2018 SWA Conference are now open (via My Swim Results) and all Club Presidents and Committee members are requested to attend. Given the importance of this year’s Conference, I encourage all Regional Coordinators and Regional Clubs to book your travel arrangements now so that you can be part of what will be a very exciting and new approach to the way in which our sport will operate in the lead into Tokyo and beyond.

Finally, all SWA Members are advised that nominations for SWA Life Membership will open on Friday 10 August and close 5.00 pm Friday 14 September. Nomination forms will be sent to all Regional Coordinators and Committees, SWA Club Presidents and posted on the SWA website. Please take a moment to consider those in your Club and local area that have given dedicated service to Swimming WA over an extended period and please take the time to nominate them. Please call Ryan or Sophie in the office should you require assistance.

I am looking forward to a big August and to working with our Members in ensuring that swimming is an essential part of the Western Australian way of life.

Regards,

Darren Beazley
