Happy new year and welcome to the February edition of E-splash.
We’ve had a fantastic start to 2017 with our swimmers diving back into both pool and open water events.
The Open Water Swimming Series has taken to Albany, Harvey Dam, Bunbury, Sorrento and Rockingham so far this year, with each event attracting big numbers. Almost 1000 people had a go in distances from 150m to 10km in the Australia Day Sorrento round, including many people completing their very first open water swim. As a father, it was great to see so many parents swim with their kids and make it a real family fun day out at that round in particular. I encourage more parents to similarly jump in and have a go in our remaining open water rounds.
There are just three rounds left in the 2016/17 Series, so if you haven’t challenged yourself to a swim yet, make sure you head to openwaterswimming.com.au and register now.
Over Friday 27 to Sunday 29 January, 60 of WA’s best open water swimmers descended on Brighton Beach in Adelaide for the 2017 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships. They represented WA outstandingly, bringing home ten medals between them including gold in the inaugural mixed relay event. Click here to read a full wrap-up of their swims.
In the pool our swimmers kicked off the year with the SunSmart Country Championships and SunSmart Rookie Meet. It was great to see so many of our country and novice swimmers take to the pool. Both meets were a lot of fun and a great continuation of the long course season.
February is shaping up to be another exciting month in the pool with many Clubs hosting their own SunSmart Splash & Dash carnivals plus the SunSmart Club Premierships, 2017 Country Pennants and SunSmart Long Course Qualifying Meet 3 all taking place.
February is a fantastic month filled with opportunities for everyone of every level to get involved with swimming, so make sure you check out the Swimming WA calendar and follow the Facebook page to ensure you’re aware of everything going on.
