2019 SunSmart WA State Age Long Course Swimming Championships Day 3

22 December 2019

The third night of the 2019 SunSmart WA State Age Long Course Swimming Championships arrived in style with many of the State’s rising stars set to take to the water. Spectators were treated to a variety of events and absolute nail-biting finishes as we crowned many State Titles including some athletes for the first time.

Some of this evening’s highlights include;

Girl’s 15 Years 100m Butterfly –

Kate Harrison (Westside Christchurch) was nothing short of spectacular as she dominated the Girl’s 15 Years 100m Butterfly. It was clear from the start that Harrison was out on a mission as she exploded through the first 50m to turn in 28.37, going on to finish in 1:00.51. Harrison’s swim breaks the WA Residential Record formerly held by Swimming WA Ambassador and 2016 Olympian, Brianna Throssell.

Boy’s 14 Years 100m Butterfly –

Spectators were treated to another fantastic race as the Boy’s 14 Years 100m Butterfly did not disappoint. Through the first 50m, the race was between Harrison Farmer (Central Aquatic, c: Wayne De Lacy), Nathon Sason (UWA-West Coast, c: Rob Palfery) and Tom Wyatt (Arena, c: Simon Redmond). However, through the last 15m, Farmer proved too strong as he made a final surge to finish in 1:00.74 ahead of Sason (1:00.99) and Wyatt (1:01.43).

Girl’s 13 Years 400m Freestyle –

Once again the youngsters were bringing the heat on Night 3 as Jaymie Lutton (Perth City, c: Andy Muller) and Telani Woodham (UWA-West Coast, c: Rob Palfery) went head to head over the Girl’s 13 Years 400m Freestyle. The first half of the race, the two youngsters went stroke for stroke, before Lutton made her move in the third 100m which proved to be pivotal on her way to victory. Lutton cruised her way to Gold, touching in 4:40.99 ahead of Woodham in 4:43.82 and Georgia Blaine (Breakers, c: Harry Clark) 4:48.18.

Boy’s 17 Year’s 400m Freestyle –

A stacked field took to the water in the Boy’s 17 Year’s 400m Freestyle for the ultimate showdown between the state’s best Freestyler’s. The early leader was Robert Bonsall (UWA-West Coast, c: Michael Shaw), using his signature early speed to establish a nice gap on the field. However, Bonsall’s run was short-lived as Kyle Lee (Bunbury, c: Jason Evans) and Hugh Moran (UWA-West Coast, c: Michael Shaw) quickly closed the distance and took control of the race. Unfortunately for Moran, Lee is a specialist at closing races and stormed away with the win touching home in 4:01.74.

Girl’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay –

What a spectacular race to finish the session as the Girl’s relay proved the highlight of the evening once again! UWA-West Coast were off to a flying start through a powerful leg from Caitlyn Ribbons and Crystal Edwards, however, the team from Breakers were just behind through a fast start from Elyse Weston and Samantha Macfarlane. Much like Friday Evening’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay, it came down the second half of the race where Freya Weston and Iona Anderson proved too strong touching the wall in 3:57.48, ahead of UWA-West Coast (3:57.70) and St Hilda’s (4:01.46).

After another night full of incredible swimming, we can’t wait to see what the final day of competition has in store.

Once again, we would like to thank the generosity of the Swimming WA Officials and volunteers who give up their time to ensure the success of Championships meets such as this.

Finals kick off tomorrow at 6 pm, tickets available at the door or stay tuned via the Swimming WA Facebook.
