FINA World Swimming Championship Success

02 August 2019

Our very own West Australian Brianna Throssell (Club: UWA-West Coast, Coach: Mick Palfery - WAIS) recently represented her State and the Australian Dolphins with some outstanding performances at the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, competing in a total of 4 finals, collecting 2 gold medals, achieving a personal best and claiming a new world record!

Throssell, a WAIS scholarship holder, was a member of the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay that stood high on top of the podium claiming gold and setting a new Championship record. The team of Bronte Campbell (52.85), Brianna Throssell (53.34), Emma McKeon (52.57) and Cate Campbell (51.45) came home in a time of 3:30.21 ahead of the United States (3:31.02) and Canada (3:31.78).

Throssell competed in the Women’s 100m Butterfly making the final alongside team mate Emma McKeon. Throssell battled in a very close field, registering a new personal best time finishing fifth overall in 57.09. A great individual accomplishment for Brianna.

In the Women’s 200m Butterfly, Throssell qualified for the semi-finals finishing 11th seed in 2:10.03, however, chose not to compete further in the event in order to manage her workload. A smart decision based on what was to come.

In a phenomenal finish to the fifth night of the Meet, Throssell was a pivotal part in breaking the world record in the Women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay and claimed the coveted gold ahead of the USA.

In spectacular fashion, the quartet of Ariarne Titmus (1:54.27), Madison Wilson (1:56.73), Brianna Throssell (1:55.60) and Emma McKeon (1:54.90) posted 7:41.50 to smash the previous world record of 7:42.08 which was set by the People’s Republic of China a decade ago in 2009.

Throssell was then back in the water for the Women’s 50m Butterfly. Touching in 26.14, qualifying equal 11th fastest to progress through to the semi-finals. The semi’s saw her qualify 6th fastest, lining up behind lane 1 for the final and finishing eighth overall with a time of 26.11.

Congratulations to Brianna on an unbelievable campaign. The Lead into Tokyo 2020 is looking extremely bright!
