Joshua Yong impresses on the first night of Trials, finishing 3rd in the 100m breaststroke

14 June 2023

The 2023 World Championship Trials kicked off yesterday at the Melbourne Sports Centre, with 27 of our Western Australian swimmers going head-to-head in their quest for a spot on the Australian team for the World Aquatics 2023 World Championships Fukuoka, Japan.

Yesterday morning, Joshua Yong (UWA West Coast/WAIS) secured a spot in the finals for the men’s 100m breaststroke and his performance in the evening was nothing short of remarkable. Yong shaved off some time from his morning swim and finished 3rd, narrowly missing the World Championships qualification time by 0.59 seconds. WA’s breaststroker will be contending for a spot in the 50m and 200m breaststroke during the week.

Recently selected onto the Australian Para Championships team, Alex Saffy S10 (Bunbury/AIS) raced last night in the 100m freestyle and has entered in other events throughout the week, purely for preparation leading into the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships. Saffy will be travelling to Manchester later next month.

Tegan Reder SB11 (UWA West Coast/WAIS) and Jordan Berryman SB8 (UWA West Coast, c: Brett Tongue), both swimmers are part of the Para Flippers Development Squad, competed in the multi-class 50m breaststroke event last night and finished second and third respectively. The Para Flippers Development Squad are using Trials to fine-tune their race performances.

Among the other WA athletes who competed yesterday were Adam Chillingworth (21st) in the 100m breaststroke, Alec Mander (12th), Adam Sudlow (20th), Robert Bonsall (22nd) and Alessio Marci (31st) in the men’s 400m freestyle.

Bring on Day 2 of Trials and stay tuned on 9Now.
