Kyle Lee's Olympic dream inches closer after World Cup victory in Portugal

06 December 2023

Last weekend witnessed a tidal wave of strength and determination as the North Coast dynamic trio – Kyle Lee, Jack Wilson, and Robbie Bonsall – surged to the forefront at the final leg of the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup.

In the 4x1500m mixed relay, Lee's close finish performance drove the Australian team to clinch the gold medal, with relay teammates Moesha Johnson, Chelsea Gubecka, and Bailey Armstrong setting the race with a strong lead.

In the individual men’s 10km race, Lee finished in sixth-place overall, just missing a podium position by a mere second, clocking in at 1:45:16.50. Australian teammate, Nick Sloman was the only Aussie ahead, making Lee the second Australian to cross the finish line. This strong performance enhances Lee's chances of being selected for the Australian Team for the upcoming World Championships in Doha, potentially paving the way for him to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.

Teammates Jack Wilson (25th) and Robbie Bonsall (27th) weren’t far behind Lee in the 10km event. Wilson crossed the finish line at 1:45:43.30, closely followed by Bonsall at 1:45:54.80.

Together with Maddy Gough and Jacqueline Davison-McGovern, Wilson and Bonsall formed a second Australian relay team in the 4x1500m, earning a respectable sixth place.

Looking ahead, Kyle Lee is now one step closer to his dreams of making the Olympic Team. With his training and dedication, Lee gears up for the final qualifier, the Doha World Championships, scheduled for February next year.
