New Board Members & Committees Announced at the Swimming WA AGM

11 October 2022

Last weekend was very busy for Swimming WA with the Technical Official, Coach/Teacher and Club Conference. The time of the year when we all networked between each other and turned to look towards the future of swimming in Western Australia. The Technical Official Conference took place on the Friday night at Sports HQ followed by the Club & Coach/Teacher Conference on Saturday morning.

On the Friday night in the Technical Official Conference, Steve Hill and Steve Jones explored the nuts and bolts of Open Water Officiating to upskill our new technical officials and provide a refresher course for our returning officials. Ryan Arblaster discussed a number of industry updates. Kylie Baker, Trevor Verran and Kaye Bolger will be discussed case studies and explored practices.

On Saturday morning at the coach/teacher conference, Greg Hire, an Australian professional basketball player and Athlete Wellbeing & Engagement Advisor WAIS, explored how to manage parent and athlete expectations. Dr Sandy Gordon, an Associate Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology at UWA, introduced participants to key positive communication skills that facilitate optimal swimmer - coach relationships. Our coaches then stayed in the room for a Q&A with North Coast Swim Club coach, Ian Mills, who explained his athlete centered coaching philosophy. Our teachers headed out to the pool to meet Kwinana Swimming Club coach, Lucky Weerakkody, who ran a practical session with swimmers and demonstrated how to enhance their technique and swimming experience.
