North Coast Boys Lead the Way at Leighton

01 November 2022

Over the weekend the Open Water Swimming Series held their second round at Leighton Beach. Our newly appointed Elite athletes braved the cold water and competed in the 7.5km Western Australian State Championships.

It was a very close finish between top 3 swimmers; Kyle Lee, Jack Wilson (North Coast Swim Club, c: Ian Mills) and Byron Kimber (Westside Christchurch Aquatic Club, c: Jon Harrison), although Kyle has continued to be unbeatable on his home soil after competing internationally. Kyle touch at a time of 1:26:40.7 and Jack followed only a second after at 1:26:41.7. Byron stuck with both boys most of the way and finished with a time of 1:26:43.8.

Westside Christchurch swimmer, Bianca Monaco touched first out of the female Elite, 1:36:48.9. Chloe Truscott from North Coast Swim Club came second at 1:37.45.6 and Rosie Wilson, also from North Coast Swim Club, touched at 1:45:18.0. Congratulations girls!

Leighton was the first round of our new relays, the Teams and Duos! We were excited to see participants getting their family and friends involved and enjoying the fun of open water swimming. Teams (4 swimmers) and Duos (2 swimmers) are open to everyone and are available at Sorrento, Mullaloo and Coogee this season.

In the 2.5km, the swimmer who finished closest to the time of 42 minutes and 5 seconds won a money prize. Out of over 100 swimmers, Jae Moffat finished with a time of 42:02.3. Congratulations Jae!

Swimming WA are grateful for the City of Fremantle for their support and generosity to ensure the event ran successfully. Additionally, we would like to thank Wase Timing, RD Events, HMP, Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club and Riverton Aquanauts Swim Club for their assistance during the day.
