Popham officially off to Tokyo

17 June 2021

Kieren Pollard (North Coast) led the way on night five of the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials, in the Men’s 200 Individual Medley, where he placed fifth in a time of 2:01.70. A huge effort for Pollard, dropping almost three seconds from his entry time.

In the Multi-Class Men’s 100m Backstroke, Paralympian Jeremy McClure (South Shore) finished in eighth with a time of 1:13.70. Not long after Talara-Jade Dixon (St Hilda’s) swam in the B Final of the Women’s 200m Breaststroke, where she finished in 14th place, clocking a time of 2:34.48.

In the Men’s 200m Backstroke, Joshua Edwards-Smith (UWA West Coast) swam a strong race to finish in fifth place with a 1:59.20. As one of the youngest competitors in the field, this bodes well for Edwards-Smith’s future in the men’s backstroke events.

In the final event of the night, Brianna Throssell (UWA West Coast) placed seventh in the Women’s 100m Freestyle, clocking a time of 54.27. In the B Final, Tamsin Cook (UWA West Coast) placed 13th touching the wall in a 55.31.

To round out a huge night for WA swimmers, Ben Popham (Arena) was officially announced as a member of the Australian Paralympic Team for Tokyo 2021. In what has been a huge week for the youngster, notably breaking the S8 Australian Record in the 100m Freestyle, Popham will be WA’s sole swimming representative in Tokyo.

Stay tuned for the latest news from the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials as we bring all the action from the last night in Adelaide.
