Pristine Waters of Rockingham to host 2019 State Open Water Swimming Championships.

22 November 2019

This Saturday 23rd November will see Rockingham Beach host the 2019 Swimming WA Open Water Swimming (OWS) State Championships. More than 550 swimmers are expected to take part in this prestigious event.

The swim also doubles as Round 4 of the 2019/20 SWA OWS Series, which enables the general public to take part. The first wave gets underway at 8.00 am. There are a variety of distances to suit all ages and swimming abilities– 500m, 1.25km, 2.5km, 5km, 7.5 km and 10 km.

Western Australian Premier and local member for Rockingham, the Hon Mark McGowan MLA will be starting each distance with Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels helping out with medal presentations during the morning. This is the fifth time that Rockingham beach has been included in the SWA OWS since the Series began 12 years ago.

Swimming WA Chief Executive Mr. Darren Beazley is keen to see the cream of Western Australian swimming on display;

“Western Australia is known for open water swimming and have produced champions over many years. With the Olympic Games in 2020, this year’s State OWS Championships will have added significance. The public should keep an eye out for Kyle Lee, Sofie Frichot, Nicola Fraschini, Byron Kimber and Fiona Cullinane, who will be hard to beat.

I am delighted that the Premier will our guest starter. He attended last year’s round and we are thrilled he is back again this year. He and the Deputy Premier the Hon. Roger Cook MLA (SWA Vice Patron), have been wonderful supporters of swimming in this State and the direction of the Association over the past 5 years.

Swimming WA is thrilled to have the support of The West Australian newspaper, Naval Base Concrete and the City of Rockingham for the Championships.”

The OWS Series attracts over 6,000 swimmers over the summer and the 2019/20 OWS Series has rounds at Coogee, Cottesloe Beach, Busselton, Rockingham, Mandurah, Mullaloo, Sorrento, Shorehaven, Scarborough, Harvey Dam, Bunbury and our most recent addition, Hearson’s Cove near Karratha.
