WAIS Head Coach and swimmer selected into the Australia A team

22 June 2023

Two outstanding individuals from our swimming community have been selected into the Australia A team which is set to compete in the US.

Ben Higson, the Head Coach of the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) and UWA West Coast/WAIS swimmer Joshua Yong have been chosen to join the Australia A team as they gear up to take on the US at the TYR Pro Championships. The event is scheduled to take place from July 26 to 29, 2023, in Irvine, California.

Ben Higson, who has been leading WAIS as Head Coach for the past 1.5 years, brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience from his involvement in two national programs. Having served as a Coach for Great Britain at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and various World Championships, as well as guiding three athletes on the Irish Olympic team at the recent Tokyo Olympic Games. His leadership has played a fundamental role in the success of many WA swimmers, including Joshua Yong, at both national and international competitions.

Under the guidance of Higson, Joshua Yong has been chosen as a team member of the Australia A team. Yong's exceptional talent and hard work have earned him a place among the country's finest swimmers and his selection further positions him as a potential contender for a spot in the Paris Olympics scheduled for the following year.

To ensure peak performance at the TYR Pro Championships, the Australia A team will undergo a week-long Staging Camp in Laguna Hills, California, before the competition in Irvine. This pre-competition training camp will provide the swimmers with an opportunity to fine-tune their skills and adapt to the local conditions. Each training and competition session will contribute to their growth and readiness for the Championships and ultimately, their journey towards the Paris Olympics.

Swimming WA extends congratulations to Ben Higson and Joshua Yong on their selection into the Australia A team. Their achievements not only reflect their individual dedication and commitment but also highlight the exceptional talent nurtured within Western Australia. As the countdown to the TYR Pro Championships begins, all eyes will be on Higson and Yong as they embark on this journey as they strive to secure their positions for the Paris Olympics.
