Weller touches out Lanfear Appleby at OWS Series Round 4

Swimming WA’s Open Water Swimming (OWS) Series Round 4 at Rockingham Foreshore, where more than 400 passionate swimmers embraced the sunny Sunday morning for the Open Water Swimming (OWS) Series. The Rockingham Swimming Club dominated the event with numerous winners emerging from their athletes.

The highlights start with Rylee Ellis (Rockingham), who powered through the 500m race, securing the overall win. Following closely, Hayden Manning (Rockingham) claimed the top spot among male swimmers. Stephen Hughes (Rockingham) led the 1.25km race and surged across the finish line, with 12-year-old Mia-Maria Gstaettner (Rockingham) impressively clocking in behind at 17:54.5.

The 2.5km event intensified, witnessing Hayden Headling (North Coast) and Ariane Diggins (Busselton) leading the pack as the first male and female swimmers to conquer the challenge. The 5km race delivered a neck-and-neck battle between Rebekah Weller (Rockingham) and Madoc Lanfear Appleby (Western Sprint). In a nail-biting finale, Weller clinched for the win with a time of 1:06:24.8, a mere second ahead of Lanfear Appleby.

The success of this event was made possible by the generous support of the City of Rockingham. Mayor Deb Hamblin graced the occasion, officially launching the event, sounding the starting horn, and personally honouring the participants with well-deserved medals. The collaborative efforts of Wase Timing, RD Events, HMP, Secret Harbour Surf Lifesaving Club, and Rockingham Swimming Club were also recognised for their contributions. A big thank you extends to the dedicated volunteers, including the team Technical Officials, who ensured the smooth execution of the event.
