WA Swimmers Start Summer Season with a Bang!

18 October 2020

The 2020/21 long course season kicked off this weekend at the SunSmart Long Course Qualifying Meet #1, the first long course meet since the beginning of COVID-19.

With 635 swimmers representing 30 clubs, it was fantastic to see the Swimming WA community continue to flourish as they came together to prepare for a big summer of racing.

There were multiple highlights across the weekend with an incredible amount of personal best times being achieved. One of the stand-out swimmers was Jake Smith (Scarborough Beach, c: Cameron Hawthorn) who has returned to form after a brief period away from competing. Smith dominated in the 100m Butterfly and 200m Butterfly as well as showing his versatility by finishing strongly in the 200m IM, touching in 2:10.33.

The weekend provided athletes across the State an opportunity to test themselves in new events in a safe and supportive environment, equating to growth within the athletes and the sport as a whole.

Swimming WA would like to acknowledge the ongoing hard work and support provided by all Clubs and Coaches who worked tirelessly to ensure athletes were able to develop throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Western Australians are very fortunate to have been able to train throughout this difficult time, and athletes across the State should appreciate those who have helped them succeed.

Once again, Swimming WA would like to thank our wonderful Technical Officials who work tirelessly to ensure the success of events such as this weekend. The Officiating community in Western Australia is the best in the country and without their ongoing support, Swimming WA would not be able to continue to prosper.
