Guildford & Kalamunda and Tony Ball honoured at Swimming Australia Awards 2023

14 November 2023

On Saturday, 11 November, the Swimming Australia Awards 2023 presented the Club of the Year title to Guildford & Kalamunda Districts Swimming Club (GK) and recognised Kwinana Swimming Club’s Tony Ball as the Local Legend of the Year.

GK Winner

Guildford & Kalamunda, also crowned as Swimming WA Metropolitan Club of the Year, embarked on an incredible journey marked by leadership transitions. The appointment of Head Coach Edward Adams from Adelaide last year brought a strategic vision spanning 3-5 years, focusing on elevating membership, enhancing performance, and fostering a robust club culture.

GK, celebrated for its strong family and community ambiance, actively engages with the community through initiatives such as the Starlight Foundation Super Swim and fundraising events supporting causes like Books for Bobby and RUOK Day. Inclusivity is key, with social events catering to swimmers and parents alike, ranging from LaserTag and movie nights to Sundowner gatherings.

Boosted by a successful Learn to Swim program, GK strategically reinvests in its infrastructure, recently acquiring cutting-edge equipment including Wylas timing and Starter, WinnerCam underwater camera system, and an ice bath. The club goes beyond athletic training, integrating mental health sessions into the program, and ensuring a supportive environment for swimmers through Mental Health First Aid courses.

Actively pursuing grants, GK secured federal funding for volunteer support and delivered nutrition talks through the City of Kalamunda. The club's commitment to holistic development was highlighted by its dedication to creating a safe haven for young swimmers, recognising the pool as not just a training ground but a sanctuary.

Tony Ball

The Swimming Australia Local Legend of the Year Award was presented to Tony Ball from Kwinana Swimming Club. With over 50 years of service, Tony's role as the State Records Officer for Swimming WA has left an enduring mark. Acknowledged for meticulous record-keeping and encyclopedic knowledge, Tony's generosity, enthusiasm, and remarkable recall make him a living treasure within Swimming WA and Kwinana Swimming Club. Tony Ball truly embodies the spirit of a local legend and is highly deserving of the Swimming Australia Local Legend of the Year.

Congratulations to both Guildford & Kalamunda and Tony Ball for their outstanding contributions to the swimming community!
