Regional Swim Clinics kick off in Narrogin

17 October 2023

Swimming WA visited Narrogin on the 15th of October for a Regional Swim Clinic led by two amazing coaches in Taarna Cam (Australind) and Jo Stephen (Northam). Thirty-six eager young swimmers were in attendance, ranging from ages seven to fifteen and from nine different regional clubs. The clinic started with some dryland stretches and warm-ups and an opportunity to get to know some of the other swimmers from other clubs. Not only are these clinics designed to enhance the skillset of our swimmers, but also connect them and build friendships across the state.

From there the group moved into the pool where the participants were divided into lanes based on age. Cam and Stephen quickly assessed the skill levels and made any necessary changes to ensure that every participant could get the most out of the clinic. The first focus was on streamline positions and why it is the most important technique to conquer. The coaches did an impeccable job of explaining this to the participants before giving them broken down drills and specific feedback to work on.

Next focus was a freestyle progression which looked at getting the ears and shoulders connected when breathing. The participants completed another six drills that helped facilitate the development of their freestyle strokes. The final focus for the clinic was a turn progression and how best to connect each individual skill to complete the bets tumble-turn possible.  A ninety-minute clinic which saw every single second utilised for learning and developing had come to an end and the parents joked that their kids would sleep well that night!

This clinic was also an opportunity for our club teachers to be on pool deck learning and being mentored by both Cam and Stephen. The notes and networking opportunity that these three teachers could walk away with is amazing and helps share knowledge and resources amongst our regional clubs.

A big thankyou to the host club Narrogin who put on a sausage sizzle fundraiser which was enjoyed by everyone after the clinic, as well as the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries for their ongoing support to ensure these regional clinics can continue to happen.
