Wheatbelt welcomes first Regional Swim Clinic of 2024

23 January 2024

The first Regional Swim Clinic of 2024 took place in Kellerberrin, a Wheatbelt town just over two hours from Perth. The Kellerberrin Swimming Pool, closed for over 12 months due to redevelopments and upgrades, has been transformed into an exceptional facility. The new 25m pool, shade sails, grassed area, and kiddy pool set the stage for a fantastic day, attracting participants from various towns.

The clinic, led by esteemed coaches Gaye Pocrnja (Claremont Aquatic) and Will Scott (WAIS), hosted 24 participants from Dalwallinu, Kellerberrin, Moora, Muckinbudin, Narrogin, Northam, and York. The clinic was split into two halves with a different stroke being the focus each half.

Pocrnja took charge of the older group, including a 74-year-old participant who, despite physical limitations, stayed in the water, offering inspiration to younger attendees. Coaches introduced novel drills, enriching participants' swimming development and providing valuable tools for their home clubs.

The dry land exercises involved bodyweight and resistance, such as the BOSU ball and box jump, were incorporated, adding a unique dimension to the training experience. The coaches' ability to bring innovation to the clinic enhanced the overall learning for participants.

Following a brief break, participants swapped lanes for continued learning. Parents and younger siblings observed intently, gaining extra tips and tricks. The session concluded with diving practice which included a pool noodle to dive under, injecting an element of fun. One comment from an older swimmer as she got out of the water was “that was amazing, I already feel like I improved so much.”

This clinic also served as a platform for up-and-coming swim teachers to receive one-on-one mentoring from Pocrnja and Scott on the pool deck, contributing extensively to their professional development. Their ability to absorb insights and lessons during the two-hour session promises to enhance their contributions to their respective clubs.

A huge thank you to the Shire of Kellerberrin and the Kellerberrin Amateur Aquatic Club for their hospitality and use of their fantastic facilities, to Gaye Pocrnja and Will Scott for their dedication and time planning the session and to the Department of Local Government Sport & Cultural Industries for your continued support in allowing Swimming WA to visit our regions.
